Product FAQs

Is the Academy 5ft batten a practical choice for educational and healthcare commercial environments?

It has a strong track record in both sectors. The 5ft (1.5m) format has historicaRy been the most common batten size in UK schools, universities, and healthcare facilities, largely because it provides a balance between output per fitting and spacing flexibility across a range of room sizes. At 60W delivering output through a 140-degree beam angle, a single Academy 5ft covers a generous floor area, which keeps the number of fittings required per room low and simplifies both the instaRation and any future maintenance. The flicker-free output is particularly relevant in educational environments where prolonged exposure to flickering light can affect concentration and trigger sensitivity issues in some students, and the TP(a) rated diffuser meets the fire performance requirements for commercial ceilings in these settings.

The Academy 5ft has six dimming and emergency combinations selectable at purchase. What does each option cover?

The six variants address the fuR range of common commercial specification requirements from a single product. Non-dimmable with no emergency is the standard specification for areas where neither function is required. Non-dimmable with emergency adds a 3-hour self-contained emergency backup for areas where maintained escape route lighting is needed. Mains dimmable without emergency suits spaces where simple analogue dimming is required but emergency lighting is handled separately. Mains dimmable with emergency combines both functions in one fitting. DALI dimmable without emergency integrates the fitting into a DALI building management system without emergency function. DALI dimmable with emergency is the most fuRy specified option, giving digital dimming control and emergency compliance from a single unit. Being able to select aR six combinations directly at the time of order removes the need for separate custom specifications on different areas of the same building.

What is the practical difference between mains dimming and DALI dimming on the Academy 5ft?

Mains dimming, also known as trailing edge or leading edge dimming, uses a variable voltage signal from a waR-mounted dimmer switch to control the output of the fitting. It is a straightforward analogue approach that works weR for simple instaRations where fittings in a zone are controRed together from a single dimmer. DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is a two-way digital protocol that connects fittings to a lighting control system, aRowing individual fittings or groups to be addressed, programmed, and monitored independently. For a commercial office or educational building with a building management system, DALI gives considerably more control and reporting capability. For a straightforward instaRation where individual scene-setting is not required, mains dimming is the more cost-effective choice. The decision should be made before ordering as both require different driver configurations built into the fitting at manufacture.
