Product FAQs

What are the IP and IK ratings for this fitting?

It has an IP20 rating, making it suitable for dry indoor environments. It also features an IK04 rating for impact resistance, thanks to its durable steel body and polycarbonate opal diffuser.

What is the lifespan of the LEDs?

These lights are rated for an average life expectancy of 50,000 hours. Combined with high-efficiency Epistar LEDs, this dramatically reduces long-term maintenance costs compared to traditional fluorescent tubes.

Can the Academy LED Batten be suspended or only surface mounted?

Both. While it is designed primarily for quick surface mounting on ceilings, it can optionally be suspended. Please contact us directly if you require a suspension kit for your installation.

Is the Academy 1.2m batten the right choice for a smaller commercial office or meeting room?

For enclosed meeting rooms, private offices, and cellular workspace layouts, the 1.2m is generally the more precise specification. At 40W and 4,812 lumens across a 140-degree beam angle, it delivers the right output for a smaller floor area without over-lighting the space, which can be just as problematic as under-lighting in a meeting environment. It also aligns well with standard 1.2m ceiling grid modules, making positioning and installation more straightforward in offices with a suspended tile grid. For compartmentalised commercial interiors where coverage per fitting matters, the Academy 1.2m hits the right balance between output and footprint.

What does a TP(a) diffuser rating mean, and why does it matter in a commercial building?

building?
TP(a) is a fire performance classification for thermoplastic materials used in luminaire diffusers. A TP(a) rated diffuser, like the opal polycarbonate used in the Academy, will not drip or fall in burning droplets when exposed to fire. This is significant in commercial and public buildings because burning droplet spread is one of the primary ways fire travels across a ceiling plane. Building Regulations in the UK specify TP(a) rated diffusers as a requirement in certain ceiling applications, particularly in commercial properties and spaces used by the public. Specifying a fitting with a TP(a) diffuser from the outset removes any compliance risk at sign-off stage.

The Academy 1.2m mentions a microwave sensor option. What does that mean and when would it be useful?

A microwave sensor detects movement through microwave frequency signals, which means it can sense occupancy through non-metallic materials such as partition walls and ceiling tiles, unlike a standard PIR sensor which relies on line-of-sight infrared detection. For a commercial office, this makes the Academy 1.2m a practical option in corridors, storage rooms, or back-of-house spaces where occupancy is intermittent and energy efficiency is a priority. The Academy 1.2m switches on when the sensor detects movement and returns to a standby or off state after a set period of inactivity. This needs to be specified at the time of order, so get in touch if it's a requirement for your installation.
