Product FAQs

What is the best compact recessed downlight for task lighting above a reception desk or specific work zone in a commercial office UK?

For targeted task lighting above a reception desk, individual workstation, or defined zone within a commercial interior, a compact recessed linear downlight in the 130mm range provides precise, low-glare illumination with a minimal ceiling footprint. The key considerations are beam angle and lumen output relative to the mounting height. A 50-degree beam at low wattage distributes light accurately over a focused area without overspill into adjacent zones. Linear Lights stocks the E-Pro 1x3, a 130mm three-cell recessed linear downlight available at 6W delivering 635 lumens or 12W delivering 1268 lumens, in 3000K or 4000K, with CRI >90Ra, black or white trim, and gun metal round aperture optics. UK manufactured and 5-year warranty.

What beam angle should a recessed downlight have for office task lighting UK?

Beam angle selection depends on mounting height and the size of the area being lit. For task lighting at standard commercial ceiling heights of 2.5m to 3m, a beam angle between 45 and 60 degrees delivers focused illumination over a desk or work surface without creating hard shadows or excessively bright spots. Wider beam angles above 60 degrees shift the fitting towards general ambient use, while narrower angles below 30 degrees are better suited to accent and display applications. A 50-degree beam at 6W to 12W is typically sufficient for individual workstation or reception desk lighting where the fitting is positioned directly overhead and supplementary general lighting is provided by the wider scheme.

How does a compact recessed linear downlight work within a layered commercial lighting scheme UK?

In a well-designed commercial lighting scheme, task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting are treated as separate layers rather than one fitting trying to do everything. A compact 130mm recessed linear downlight with a 50-degree beam fits into the task lighting layer, providing focused illumination at specific points, such as above a reception counter, at a collaboration table, or within a meeting booth, without interfering with the ambient layer provided by larger linear fittings or recessed panels across the wider ceiling. This approach gives far greater control over light levels and atmosphere in different zones of an office or commercial interior, and is the standard specification methodology used by commercial lighting designers. Linear Lights offers a free lighting design service for projects requiring a layered lighting approach across multiple fitting types.
