Product FAQs

What are the IP and IK ratings for this fitting?

It has an IP20 rating, making it suitable for dry indoor environments. It also features an IK04 rating for impact resistance, thanks to its durable steel body and polycarbonate opal diffuser.

What is the lifespan of the LEDs?

These lights are rated for an average life expectancy of 50,000 hours. Combined with high-efficiency Epistar LEDs, this dramatically reduces long-term maintenance costs compared to traditional fluorescent tubes.

Can the Academy LED Batten be suspended or only surface mounted?

Both. While it is designed primarily for quick surface mounting on ceilings, it can optionally be suspended. Please contact us directly if you require a suspension kit for your installation.

Is the Academy 1.8m batten a practical choice for open-plan office lighting?

Yes, and it's particularly well suited to functional commercial spaces where output and coverage take priority over architectural finish. At 68W with 8,145 lumens and a 140-degree beam angle, a single fitting delivers wide, even coverage across a large floor area, which makes it efficient to space across an open-plan layout without creating dark zones between fittings. The 4000K colour temperature supports sustained concentration and aligns with CIBSE recommendations for general office illuminance. For back-of-house areas, staff rooms, kitchens, and utility corridors within a commercial fit-out, it delivers a high-specification result at a practical price point.

Power factor measures how efficiently a fitting draws power from the mains supply. A power factor of 1.0 is perfect efficiency, meaning all drawn power is converted into usable light output. At >0.95, the Academy is very close to that ideal. In a domestic setting this rarely matters, but in a commercial building where dozens or hundreds of fittings are running simultaneously, a low power factor across the installation creates reactive power that your electrical contractor and building manager will need to account for. A high power factor reduces wasted energy at the circuit level, keeps the electrical installation cleaner, and can have a direct impact on energy billing in larger commercial premises.

What does a power factor of >0.95 mean, and why should it matter to a commercial buyer?

Can DALI dimming be added to the Academy at a later stage, or does it need to be specified upfront?

It needs to be specified at the time of order. The standard Academy ships with an integral non-dimmable driver, and because the driver is built into the fitting rather than being a remote unit, it cannot be swapped out on site after installation. If dimming control is something you anticipate needing, whether for a building management system, occupancy-based controls, or compliance with Part L energy regulations, the DALI option needs to be confirmed before the order is placed. Get in touch directly to discuss requirements and lead times.
